ABOUT THE NEW SWS POVERTY NUMBERS

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GILAS’ WORLD CUP QUALIFYING POSITION AFTER BEATING IRAN

The 68-56 win revived the Philippines’ campaign, but Gilas remains fifth in Group E and still has work to do.

Gilas Pilipinas entered the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers with a 2-4 record.

An 82-81 overtime win over Jordan and a 68-56 victory over Iran moved the Philippines to 4-4. The two wins restored a realistic path to the World Cup, but they did not move Gilas into a qualifying position.

The Philippines remains fifth in Group E, one win behind Iran and Jordan. Four qualifying games are still left.

Here are five things to know about where Gilas stands and what has to happen next.

1

THE IRAN WIN MOVED GILAS CLOSER, BUT IT REMAINS FIFTH

Australia leads Group E at 8-0, followed by New Zealand at 6-2. Iran and Jordan are both 5-3, the Philippines is 4-4, and Syria is 2-6.

Gilas therefore closed the gap without changing its place in the table. It remains one win behind the two teams directly above it.

The November 27 schedule is important because the Philippines faces Syria, Iran faces Australia, and Jordan faces New Zealand. A Gilas win combined with losses by Iran or Jordan could tighten the race further.

WHAT TO WATCH

Watch all three Group E games on November 27, not only Syria against the Philippines.

The table can change through a combination of the Gilas result and the results of the teams it is chasing.

2

GILAS HAS TWO POSSIBLE ROUTES TO THE WORLD CUP

Qatar qualifies automatically as host. The Asian Qualifiers will send seven additional teams to the World Cup.

The top three teams in Groups E and F qualify. The best fourth-placed team across the two groups receives the seventh qualifying place.

FIBA says Qatar’s results count during the qualifiers, but Qatar will be excluded from the final qualification standings because its World Cup place is already secured.

For Gilas, finishing in the top three is the direct route. Finishing fourth would keep the Philippines eligible for the final place, but it would not guarantee qualification because its record would still have to be compared with the relevant fourth-placed team from Group F.

WHAT TO WATCH

Watch Group F as well as Group E.

The final comparison cannot be settled from the current table because Qatar’s host status must be applied to the final qualification standings and several games remain.

3

THE WINS OVER IRAN AND JORDAN MAY HELP IN A TIE

FIBA first uses the games among tied teams to separate teams with the same win-loss record.

The Philippines beat Iran by 12 points and Jordan by one point in Manila. Those results could become important if Gilas later finishes level with either team.

The return games still matter. Gilas plays Iran again on November 30 and Jordan again on February 25, so the final head-to-head record and point difference have not been settled.

A tie involving three or more teams is more complicated because FIBA creates a mini-table using the games among all of the tied teams before moving to wider point-difference criteria.

WHAT TO WATCH

Watch the final margins, not only the winners, in the return games against Iran and Jordan.

A close table can turn one late basket, free throw or defensive stop into a tiebreaker that matters months later.

4

FOUR QUALIFYING GAMES ARE STILL LEFT

The Philippines is scheduled to play Syria on November 27, Iran on November 30, Jordan on February 25 and Syria on February 28.

The first two are listed with Syria and Iran as the home teams. The last two are listed with the Philippines as the home team.

FIBA has not yet posted the venues and tip-off times for those games. The final Gilas rosters are also not fixed this far in advance.

The schedule gives the Philippines two games against Syria and direct rematches with both Iran and Jordan, the teams immediately above it.

WHAT TO WATCH

Watch FIBA and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for confirmed venues, times and player availability.

A schedule entry confirms the opponent and date. It does not guarantee that every player available in Manila will be available in November or February.

5

THERE IS NO HONEST MAGIC NUMBER YET

If Gilas wins all four remaining games, it will finish 8-4.

That would greatly strengthen the campaign, but no responsible calculation can assign the Philippines a guaranteed final position today. Iran, Jordan and the Group F contenders still have their own games, and ties may be decided by head-to-head results and point difference.

A 7-5 or lower finish may still be enough in some combinations. It may also fall short in others.

The useful target is therefore simpler than a manufactured magic number: win the remaining games, protect every point in the direct rematches and keep watching both second-round groups.

WHAT TO WATCH

Be cautious with qualification graphics that treat one projected record as an automatic ticket.

A valid scenario must include the remaining Group E results, the Group F comparison and the correct FIBA tiebreakers.

BOTTOM LINE

The Iran win put Gilas back in the race. It did not finish the race.

The Philippines is fifth at 4-4 with four games left, two possible qualifying routes and direct rematches against Iran and Jordan. Every win matters, and so may every point.
